Problem: Gottlieb Power Supply, On board Transformer (smaller one), Line Filter

Hi,

I accidentally and stupidly unplugged the System 1 MPU whilst the power was still on and the machine was left like that for quite a while. Obviously, when I returned to the machine later on, the pinball was smoking bad from inside the cabinet. It appears to me that the line filter was burning or is burnt, however, I have read online that it is more likely that I have probably destoyed the Power Supply board and the smaller on board transformer (which is what should have burnt very hot like a fuse). It appears to me that the power supply board looks ok and the small on board transformer looks ok, but the Line Filter looks like the device which burnt like a fuse!!!!

Any help as to what would have been permanently damaged or what to repair would be helpful?

Does anyone know if the on board transformers will be ok? And if the line filter will be ok? Or are they likely to be damaged too?

Also, if anyone is interested in repairing this for me I'd be interested in you doing it, so please send me a quote or approx repair cost (my location is Bondi junction, Sydney).

Otherwise, as I may also be capable of repairing it myself, then any helpful advice on what is likely damged or what I need to repair would be just as helpful?

Could you post some pics of the damaged areas if possible?

Also check to see if any coils have locked on and been burnt under the playfield, It is quite common for solenoids to lock on when the machine is powered up with no CPU board connected (any thing can lock on when a pin is powered up with out a cpu).

I might be wrong about the coils locking on in your machine but it's worth mentioning.

I've seen a line filter puff the magic smoke right in front of me, for no apparent reason other than bad timing.

It may have just been a coincidence. Once the line filter is replaced, varistor etc just check your voltages on the PSU before proceeding.

Did your RCD trip by any chance?

smoke/soot sprayed above line filter and onto bottom of playfield causing soot to cover globes, switches and wiring

Safety switch...

Hopefully the filter died and stopped power getting to the machine.

are line filters easy to find/buy and install?

Yes, Jaycar & Rockby etc sell the 240v line filters.  Obviously anything with electrical side of things should be installed by a licenced electrician...
