My eldest son was asking about this crap the other day, we talked about it and then i said what do you think...quote" it just sounds stupid to me dad"...smart boy.
No way in the world my kids will be using this invasive shite unless they want to pay for it themselves and I can't see that happening any time soon. Get outside and kick a footy!
Any chance a cyber nerd will actually invent something usefull for the world?....Nah of course not!

I am on FB, most of my 'friends' are pinball fans in the US, I will probably never meet them in real life

but on occasion, they will post something pinball related that I would not otherwise be aware of

That's how I feel about LEDs :) Can't understand for the life of me what the attraction is :)

Facebook is useful for some things, there's a lot of flotsam floating around that you need to ignore or block. I don't want to join your mafia, or have a virtual farm and be your neighbor. But, perhaps I *am* interested in the pinball you're working on now - or I do care that my favorite band is coming to town.

I get to see photos of my niece and nephews a few times a week, instead of once or twice a year. I've reconnected with lots of old friends. Perhaps they became old friends for a reason, and in some cases, I'm sure that's accurate, but I still see some value to it.

I don't see why it'd be hard to leave facebook - pretty easy to delete your account if you want to!

Yes, there's a lot of wasted time on there. Just like there's a lot of wasted time on smoke breaks for coworkers, or watercooler banter. Some folks will gossip, whether they are behind a keyboard, or running into an old friend at the grocery store.

Many of my facebook friends are pinball folks, too.

Hey, you could apply many of the comments about Facebook to any internet site. Some folks spend too much time reading on wikipedia. Some folks spend too much time on RGP.

World's easiest mod, no skill required to put 'em in, so very appealing for people who want to experiment.

I have a business and personal facebook page, and the personal one is used purely for business as well. It's like the Yellow Pages used to be - you needed an ad for defensive purposes, to keep up with competitors. Now fb is a bit like that for my business. Luckily my partner is a regular fb addict so I let her set it up, and frankly it does work for us. As for finding people, I used it to track down a lawyer who used to work for me, so we keep in touch (I'd like to swing her over to us one day). So yes, it has it's uses for me.

Nick makes a good point about Facebook, it can be a business tool or a private tool with social benefits.  If people who love Facebook see your business details, its added exposure for your business. Exposure for any business is a good thing. If anything, just by being on facebook, it says to like minded people that your business is living in 2012 in the modern day, and your business is up to date so to speak.

Socially, people love to communicate, and communication is both entertainment and educational. As long as it doesnt take over your life, its a reasonable thing.
Once upon a time, to socialise with family n friends u drove over n said hello. Today, with time being in short commodity, facebook etc is a efficient way to catch up n say hello. I dont use facebook, I am too busy with work and dont have a need for it at this stage. My wife, however, is an avid user and has many girlfriends who share pictures of the young kids etc etc. Facebook is like AP, take what u want from it and use what benefits you. Plenty of useful information on the web these days. Its amazing how much stuff u can learn with a few keystrokes. Google i would argue, with wiki, is more relevant for those not using facebook.

as i stated on the first page it is a tool you must use if you are a business, not using facebook for your biz is like not having a webpage these days

after this thread was created and after some of my comments about the topic, ive had a few pm's from members about how i utilize facebook for our cafe. as they are considering doing something similar, so the best i can do to explain it is to show directly the page, its not that hard to do and isn't that time consuming and often updated from your phone, http://www.facebook.com/pages/Mellum-Munchies/115543965165829 to some of those members who i talked to via pm i didn't say, it also helps with google positioning with your webpage, having links to your webpage on facebook,
many peoples points are very valid about facebook, but being as big as it is, using it is very valuable if you do it correctly, this might save people a pm but feel free to pm if after some more info, i dont mind helping

ps make your posts interesting. whilst im here, some of my posts are hard to read and i often have to edit many times, i am actually dyslexic true story lol

I put a challenge up to some of my friends whose lives totally revolve around social media.
I told them they were addicited to it, they said I was full of shite. So I bet them they could not go an entire week-end without using a mobile phone or a computer.
None of them could even last half a day....wtf!
It may be great for business and that is fine, I have no problems with this as a tool to promote a business( small business need all the tools at their disposal to prosper) but I am convinced that it is the new psudeo drug of the 21st century among our young people.

As a person who is in a similar business to Jason, I am interested to see how promoting his business via the internet works.

I am skeptical.
Yes the internet reaches millions of people, but advertising to people the other side of the globe is a little pointless for a food shop.
At best, there maybe 40,000 potential customers who are within a reasonable traveling distance

I know that smart phones mean that we now carry the internet on out pockets. But do people research the internet when looking for a place to eat?

I have checked the net both at home on the PC looking for a place to eat, and while traveling using the hand held device Pete. So that makes one!

I recently established a web based portal which business will be made or broken purely on search engine traffic, so I might have some comments on the effectiveness of the net for business generation (as opposed to attracting work to my "shop front" business).
