coils with the paper burnt off-any good?
« on: April 21, 2012, 06:31:28 PM »
While going over the bottom board in my Card Whiz EM I found four relays with the paper burnt off the coil and thought Oh No time to replace those coils. I then tested their resistance with a multimeter and found them all to be close to the value they are supposed to be according to http://www.pinballmedic.net/coil_chart.html#solenoid_coil__chart_index . I suppose they must be ok if the resistance value is ok. Don't know if these just get warm with use or what. Anybody have any input? Thanks.

The paper is probably burnt because those particular coils stay on continuosly during game play.
You can replace them with a coil of higher resistance and that will prevent them overheating, but for the time being the existing coilss are probably ok (if they are the correct coils for those relays)

Agree... more than likely Holding coils.. one of these will  hold on while the game is in attract mode too... 40 years of this and the paper is gone!!!

The coils involved are Game over relay, First ball relay, Tilt hold relay and Hold relay so yes they must be on a lot. When I fire this game up again (once it is back together) I can see if these function as they are supposed to and replace them as required. Thanks for the input.

Hold coil is on all the time... Game over also on.

Tilt relay.. shouldnt be on all the time unless game is in tilt mode. It must have been left like this for a good amount of time
First ball relay  is only really on for start of game... shouldnt be cooked
