Pinside Top 100 & Pinball Database Top 300
« on: May 16, 2012, 07:56:44 PM »
I was a little surprised to see that Tron LE has rocketed up to the number one position on Pinside, with White Water also climbing the rankings.

Then on Pinball Database AFM has slipped quite a bit which also was a surprise with Transformers LE getting up there

Also a top 100 EM's will soon be released on Pinside.

It's also rated 24 on the same ratings wonder what's going on there? I played it a few weeks back I really didn't get into it.

I thought the same but when you select the number one it specs LE and the No:24 is a pro.

Pinside have a a lot more categories to rate a machine by - looks, sound etc - 8 altogether where PDB has 4 categories I think. That is the downside of PDB as there are so many pins rated with the same score and pin side separates the pins a little clearly defining a place.

New Sterns often make it to the top 10
After a while they slip back down the chart

People buy a recently released Stern and turn into fanboys, they climb up and they drop off, seems to be the cycle. After a while it settles out to reveal the true classic stayers, eg LotR and TSPP

Only 27 ratings for Tron LE and it can be pushed to number 1 based on those few.

Let me know when it cracks 100 unique ratings and we'll talk.

I also noticed that unlike Tron LE and Pro there is no rating differentiation between the ACDC versions (currently at 69) which I think is a bit misleading as well.

Tron LE has a couple of coloured rope light tubes on the ramps and a motorised recogniser toy (no substantial change in gameplay), whereas ACDC Premium and LE have an entire additional playfield!

Rankings can be biased and tough especially when you rank machines spanning four decades or more.
One example is BK which is ranked #62 on pinside.
I personally rank this machine very high and base it on my feelings while playing a brand spanking new machine in 1981. One guy that rated it a low 6 said the two lower flippers were almost dead. I am sure he wasn't getting the same rush that I experienced all those years ago.
The pinball industry owes a lot to the like of BK, MM, CV to name a few. Pinball was in the lowest of lows back in 1980/81 because of the video invasion. BK was released and the queues to play it were unbelievable. To have it sitting on #62 does not give it a ranking it deserves.
Pinside only has 3 pre 1990 games in the top 50.
If you don't remember the 70s then you were on drugs.
If you remember playing pinball in the 70s you were having a good time.
If you don't remember anything,  then read about it here,

Think you will find it does rate the LE differently, there just hasnt been enough people rate the LE models

When they have 10 people who rate it,it will be number one
Any one who has bought a Le,{ me included} thinks they are one of the best pins ever made

So, hardly a fair rating system, I guess !@#

The B/W fanboys always get their knickers in a knot when a Stern makes the top 10.
