« on: June 25, 2012, 10:15:05 PM »
Hi guys have a local guy tell me he has a sega/stern Harley Davidson coming over that he won on eBay but it's from the US does anyone know what's involved in converting it to run on Aussie mains???    Voltage won't be an issue just the 60hz-59hz side worries me

Just the usual jumpering on the transformer and lead / plug.

HOWEVER - there is an issue with the bike motor and aussie Hz.... It caused me just a couple of headaches on a mates machine ( <..> Jeff!)

I'll email the service bulletin to you now for that.  Easy fix.

I've also had problems with the ballast for the fluro light.
You'll probably need to get a 50Hz 110V one.

Wouldn't you want it to be a 240v. !@#

Re the light ballasts from memory they are 50-60Hz....

I have seen hacks where they have been chopped and wired in straight off 240.  From memory nothing should need to be changed with the lights.

The issue with the motor is that it was spec'd to only run on 60Hz, where most items are 50-60Hz...

Attached is the Sega service bulletin just FYI.

I've had three import Sega/Stern machines (LOTR, JP LW and Sopranos) and all had problems with the ballasts.

I don't know what voltage the lights are on an Australian delivered machine, but the American domestic machines are 110V even after you have converted the machine to 240V. The ballasts in these machines are a straight 110V 60 Hz, not 50/60Hz.
Australian ballasts for normal fluros are 50/60Hz but not the ones for Sega/Stern pinnies.

Each of the three machines I've had worked for a short period before the ballast blew and have worked fine since installing the 110V 50Hz replacement.

I am an Electrician and have experienced issues with the whole 50/60Hz thing before, but don't take my word for it, leave the ballast as is and let me know how you go.

Ballast will need to be changed.. if its supplied straight from the mains voltage then US ballasts are different.. ours convert 240V/50hz to 100V... US ballasts are a much smaller step down @60hz.. if run then ballast will fail and more likely the flouro & starter also.

Yes, had to change the ballast on my Black spider, as was just was blowing the fluro when I turned it on.All good now after two fluro and two starter and the correct ballasts. #@#
