1981 Williams Hyperball

Hi guys

     Had the chance to grab this hyperball was told it was rough and needed plenty of work which is just the way i like them.

  This wont be a restere at this stage just try ang get it playable.

Game has heaps of rot in the bottom of the headbox and will need a replacement head. Also cabinet was missing the neck between the cabinet and the headbox i hate working with wood and think i did pretty well making up a replacement.

  Finally bolted whats left of the headbox on so i can plug everything and asses whats stuffed and to make sure i can get it runnibg before i go wrecking a good backbox.

once the head was on i got the first decent look at the boards.......

  Strangly enough the boards are corrosion free but the rest of the headbox is stuffed from acid damage...

So the headbox is stuffed but happily the cabinet was able to be saved todays aim was to get everything inside the cabinet repaired and finsished so i can put the playfield back in as once the ball tray and playfield are in everything inside is impossibe to work on.

Did you find that machine washed up on the beach?
the thing is covered in rust

I will be watching this as I have a backbox that has been stored in a damp place and most metal has some corosion

Do you need to replace the back panel (metal) Daniel?  I might know of a spare one to suit sitting locally.

Yes Pete does look like it washed up on the beach rust everywhere hopefully ill clean it up well enough.

Cant believe the ball lift assembly its extremely well built that spiral in the center is made from steel cleaned up pretty well.

  Whole thing was seized but managed to free it up and it now lifts a ball.   I say one ball because i only found one in the machine that isnt rusted beyond recognition.    I also found some tokens there that badely corrode i dropped one and it broke in half

Thanks for the offer Marty but i have a complete Phoenix backbox tucked away which im going to use most things are identical just need to move the hyerball specific bits across.

Repaired all the boards new interconnects and ic socket all the usual williams system3-7 stuff everything is now working except the ball shooterfor some reason keep cooking an ic on the driverboard.   I dont have any balls for it so im not to stressed at the moment.  Here are a few more pics of it squeezed into the lineup

That ball lift mech looks pretty cool, i often used to wonder as i played this title yrs ago just what kind of mechanism was used to spit the balls back up onto the p/f, so its good to finally see just what was used to do the job

Yeah looks to be a much better setup than rapid fire but I guess I'll have to wait to get more balls before I find out lol

Watching this really took me back in time to my younger days in the amusement centre in Laurieton NSW, where i used to play this title, (or rather TRY to play it)  

And seeing and hearing this (i loved the sounds on this game) has made ME want one now !!

Looks like a fun project, can't say I have ever seen a Hyperball and Rapidfire sitting side by side in a collection, nice work mate
