Sega X-Files - no sound
« on: October 05, 2012, 10:34:05 PM »
Hi all,
I was playing a mean game of my Sega X-Files machine tonight and in the middle of multiball, the speakers (two installed) started making a high pitched screech. I almost had a heart attack! Would have been a great trick for a scary X-Files machine, but immediately turned it off and when I turned it back on it had no sound at all.

I have removed and re-seated ribbon cables and connectors on the audio board. I have also removed the U7 ROM and put it back in. The speakers hum on boot up, the game plays fine, the DMD is fine, but there is no music or sound fx at all.

Any ideas?

Cheers!
Adam.

If u cant get it working, worse case scenairio, send the sound board up, I can check it in my X Files and have beaky replace/check rom etc and make any repairs to sound board if required, retest in my machine and send it back asap. PM sent with details if required.
(I will also ask Beaky to look at this post incase he has something else to suggest)

not much you can do unless you have another white star board to test the sound Ram and other sound I.C.s in.

Hey Beaky,
Sadly this is my only WhiteStar machine in the collection. Might have to send it up to you guys.

Found this on RGP Archive. X-Files with an audio/ROM issue:

Boards arrived 5 mins ago. Shall test sound board in my X Files and have Beaky weave his usual magic with the others.

Will update after I drop over to Beakys(Andys) this next few days.  ^^^

I received the board today, it was an easy fix as I suggested to cavey, faulty sound ram.

I see another company has attempted to do a repair on the battery leak damage, it was done back in 2009 and was not done properly so the corrosion has started to take hold again.
I covered up the repair's sticker as I have no interest in shaming any company that only does a half ass repair job (They are not a sponsor or connected to this site in any way but they are in Australia.)

I will remove and neutralise the corrosion properly for you before i send the board back.

Yea it's sorted also, someone had fitted a 100 volt zener diode in place of a one of the 56 volt zeners  !@#.
All the resistors and electrolytic capacitors are within tolerance (the high voltage caps are reading 160uf) but the 3 high voltage ceramic caps need replacing as usual (they are down to .05 uf from .1 uf)

Thanks Beaky and Cavey for all your help. Much appreciated!

Makes a pinball problem less daunting when there's great guys in the hobby that help out like this.

Cheers!
Adam.
