Hi all,

I'm having a couple of problems with my Williams Klondike. When the game finishes it comes up with 'Tilt' instead of 'Game Over'...it sometimes displays match and Game Over correctly but most of the time it just says 'Tilt'.

Also, when I line up a poker reel bonus such as extra ball or replay and it lands in the kick-out holes or goes through 'collect bonus' lanes, instead of getting the bonus, the 15 amp coil fuse blows and it goes dead.
Everything else works fine but I wondered if anyone else knew of these issues and had an idea how to fix them?

Make sure all stepper units operate correctly. they do seize up over time . Only use singer oil on the metal pivot points and operate them using the coil plungers, only use a drop and then wipe all the crud that will weep out.  They should be working freely, also these unit have brass contacts clean with 600 wet n dry clean up with alcohol and use the smallest amount of inox mx6 grease, jaycar carry this stuff . regarding the game over problem ,check ball count unit and /or player unit in backbox. and check the lock relay inside cabinet.  Not sure about the fuse blowing but check the playfield coils one may be seized check resistance anyhow anything less than 1ohm is RS and maybe a coil switch is set to close and locks the coil on ...And good luck most EM problems can be seen by eye so take your time and work thru it

Thanks for your help, I'm going to take the ball count stepper apart first and clean it. I also have an issue where a couple of the lights for the poker reels stopped working (and it's not the bulbs) and also, the roll over buttons and targets in front of the poker reels stopped working as well. The side lanes steel advance the reels. I've got the manual and schematic so i"ll go through each relay and check the switches...I've already checked all the coils and they are okay. I'm hoping it will be working by Christmas  ^^^

Still having issues...Game starts up but says game over on backboard. You can manually flick the ball out and start playing, flippers, bumpers, everything works. The match numbers change when it hits the bumpers. Would it be the game over relay or something else??

Game Over relay will be latched when you press credit button via a switch on coin relay (wire colours prob yellow one side and red/green on the other) . Make sure that when you press the credit button that
a) coin relay energises
b) that switch on the coin relay is closed when coin relay energises

I've got the schematic and the manual...thought someone might've had  similar issues with their early 70's Williams.

On mine, game over lights but the flippers and ball kickout don't work. Nothing on the playfield works except the three outhole which will flick the ball out. The coil on the coin door activates and the coin relay energises momentarily...the game over relay didn't latch

The game over relay is latched by the COIN RELAY.... CR will pull over but one of the switches isnt quite making contact.. its this switch that latches your GAME OVER relay.

WMS start up sequence as below:

Williams Start-Up Sequence.

When the start button is pressed, the credit unit is decremented. This is done through the credit unit zero position switch and the 2nd coin relay (and the ball count zero position switch).
The end of stroke (EOS) switch on the credit unit decrement coil will energize the coin relay.
The coin relay will trip the game over relay.
The coin relay will energize the reset relay. The score motor will run.
The reset relay will energize the ball count unit reset, through the score motor.
The reset relay energizes the 2nd coin relay latch and game over relay latch coils.
The reset relay will energize the score reset relays, through the score motor.
The score reel reset relays will zero the score reels, through the score motor. The score motor will continue to activate the score reset relays until all the score reels reach the zero position.
The reset relay activates the bonus unit coil until the bonus unit zero position switch is activated.
When the bonus relay drops out, the outhole relay is energized through a different bonus unit zero switch and score motor switch.
The outhole relay will run the score motor. The bonus unit will step up once. The ball will be kicked to the shooter lane.
Following these sequences step by step, you can usually generally locate the start up sequence problem. For example, say you have a Gottlieb multi-player game. After pressing the start button, the score motor starts turning, and the score reels all move the zero position. But the score motor keeps spinning and nothing more happens. Looking at the start-up sequence, we can see this would probably be a problem with the "SB" relay and the player unit (or maybe a dirty score reel zero position switch, which occurs in the previous step).

I got the everything starting up and no more 'game over ' indication. Score reset, ball count 5, lights, motor ok but the ball isn't being delivered to shooter lane. Only the 3 kickout holes work. I can activate bumpers underneath but they don't work on playfield.
Not sure what to check next, all coils are okay and relays cleaned and adjusted and no sign of wiring problems. @@^

Sounds like a simple adjustment fault... spoon switch isnt allowing the leaf switch to make contact when bumper skirt is pressed... your bumpers need adjusting!

More than likely the same again.. simple adjustment issue at the ball trough... leaf switches are either not making contact or are too dirty to allow current flow

I had a spare double up relay so I swapped it out and got it working properly...the rollover relay was out of adjustment and fixed the targets and rollover buttons that weren't working.
Now I just have to get the ball count to go up to 5 as I play one ball and it's game over. The coils in the stepper unit are fine, I think it's to do with the 500 bonus not operating at startup.

Working perfectly now, it was a chip out of the cam follower plastic on the impulse stack - score motor. I repaired it until I can find a replacement part.
The 500 light bonus fault was with the 3000 bonus relay which needed adjusting.
