Trying to post a little more of our work here for 2015,
This Genie playfield came in and was in need of a rework. Overall a good example, and a standard sort of starting point.
Here are a few shots of the playfield as received from the client...
The major flaw with this example (possible many) is the damage to the upper area of the playfield. Obviously this was going to be an area of attention...
Other things that stood out to us was the typical ball swirl through most colours, and the insert rings/silhouettes...
Moving along, preparing the playfield for our first stage. Thorough cleaning and sanding of the original artwork/finish...
Cleaning up the shooter lane at this stage as well...
Result, moving along...
Fast forward a little, playfield is in the booth and ready to clear for the first time. Pre-Diamond Plate playfields are more sensitive to the two-part paint system we use, so we use an adhesion promoter to aid this initial step...
Playfield is cleared and we can now begin our refinishing process on a nice clean, consistent surface...
Flattening down the finish...
Playfield is masked and first colour to go down is the yellow. Anyone who has restored a playfield using spray/airbrush will appreciate the time carefully masking all the lines and curves of each colour section...
Roughing in all the yellow in the top area...
Yellow finished...
Unmasked...
Purple...
This picture may look a little weird, but i just wanted to point out just how 'off' the white is. I have found that refinishing the white areas of an aged playfield with a clean 'bright' white can actually make the playfield look inconsistent, and draws attention to your repair. I know people will have their own opinion on this but this is what we have found to leave the most natural look...
'white' refinished...
In the booth again, we have completed alot of the colour work, and the playfield needs to be further levelled. Good chance to seal everything up and move toward the final repaints...
Cleared again...
Cured and sanded, ready for the next stage...
Where possible, we will always leave the timber natural - sometimes we have no choice but to correct. In this instance, you can see the timber has been 'sunburnt' and has left the shadow of the flippers and wireforms. As per the Addams project we documented, over thinning your colour at this stage is important so you can still see the different colours of the timber through the paint...
Shooter lane needs to be cleaned up too...
Upper area also needs a look...
Masked and refinished as sparingly as possible...
Lettering is added to the top section, starting to come together now...
Overall starting to present like a nice playfield again...
Putting in the black keylines now and things are starting to come together...
In the booth hopefully for the final time...
Upper section is looking nice now...
Everything looks nice now...
Ready to sand and polish, owner can come and take it away
Finished pictures of the playfield...
Thanks for reading guys,
