Williams Indiana Jones High End Restoration
« on: September 01, 2018, 11:42:00 PM »
This Restoration is one of four Indys that are in the queue. Two will be done in quick succession, along with other High End games simultaneously.

This example was a typical game that was very tired, but as with all these restorations, the starting point is not important, other than a nice playfield.

Objective

High End restoration - APR "Nearly In Box"

Condition Report

Cabinet - 6/10 - As with all Indys, faded artwork. Structurally good, but some separation at the front of the cabinet.

Playfield - 7/10 - No wear, but it will have some repairs and a clear to lock in the work and ensure the colours "pop".

Electronics - 8/10 - Boards are really good, but all the updates will be done in-house.

Translite - 8/10 - looks fine and will clean up well.

Starting point

The game is set up for testing and evaluation. at this point I collate a list of parts that are missing, broken, about to break or that I want to add..

The cabinet decals will be replaced..

Playfield is very good for a game that was thrashed on location !

Display was working !

Some playfield "before" pictures used as a reference.

Teardown begins - and I start to document the process.

Every detail recorded..

End of Part 1..

Under the playfield was also documented ;

Many of the parts from the top of the playfield are retained, but will not be re used on this project. Metal screws and posts will be discarded ;

While the playfield is being worked on, I moved to the cabinet as I wanted to complete another cabinet while the weather held up !

Original colours !

Stripped, sanded and now I can see what part of the cabinet needs repairs.

More sanding and prep work post repairs..

Undercoat done and now the topcoat is completed. at this point, I check for any issues that need to be addressed.

End part 2 !

Almost 2 years since I updated this restoration  !@)

The playfield was restored by Geoff at Pinball Perfection, and I'm REALLY happy with the finished product ;

Better than new !

Mounted in the Rotisserie and ready to populate.

I picked out this game as the playfield had no wear and the cabinet was really solid, with only minor repairs. BUT - A lot of the hardware had surface corrosion, and I would be wasting my time trying to clean it. So the parts unique to the game will be replated, and the common parts (screws etc) replaced. Here is an example of the hardware ;

I started experimenting with plating some of the hardware, and I was really happy with some of the parts. Another advantage of plating is the finish is obviously MUCH better. I've been plating now for years, so it is actually quicker and less labor plating than cleaning. So there parts are straight into the ultrasonic, then into the pickle and plated. I throw them in the tumbler as it is again, quick and easy. Obviously the three items on the left are cleaned, and the items on the right are straight out of plating, and are ready to tumble ;

Playfield support rest are done by changing to a longer bath. After plating I hand polish. Big difference.

While I changed bath sizes, I throw in parts from other game that are too long for the bath I use for most jobs.Moving on to playfield components, and here is the single Drop Target ;

Now look at the rear !

Yuk !

Rebuilt ;

Rebuilt with new screws, washers and springs.

Next Assembly to rebuild is the "Rotor Lock Assembly". Again, rusty and filthy.

The assembly is stripped and everything except the gearbox and motor are thrown in the ultrasonic, and then the individual parts will be plated and all the optos replaced.

Huge difference.

Assembled with new optos. Ready to re install into the machine !

Time to start populating the playfield. A few adjustments on the rotisserie..

The main lamp PCB will have all the pins and sockets reflowed. Even if they look "ok", they need to be done.

Here is a close up of a socket. Not seen completely from the naked eye, but the camera picked it up really well.

Test fit so I can start to refit the cable harnesses ;

More plating - the switch brackets. Again, easier to plate than clean.

Here's the subway assembly. Filthy and corroded. This will be fun !

Stripped ;

Zinc Plated - Really good outcome.

Ready for re assembly. Will have new opto boards throughout the entire game ;

Ball trough assembly. Corroded and ugly. Boards hacked.

More plating !

Plated - MUCH better..

New trough PCBs installed. Test fitted ok - cabling starting to come together.

New Tee Nuts, screws and the GI lamp sockets will be replaced ;

A bit nuts, but the cable brackets are plated, new screws and new cable clamps..

One of the siderails was broken, so I decided to make up some new ones and finish off by applying the Vinyl Wrap.

Path of Adventure assembly stripped, cleaned, plated and then re assembled.

Put into position..

Playfield Posts before ..

Playfield Posts After ... They posts are plated. The Machine screws are replaced or cleaned up and polished.
