I haven't seen the red and green colours (normally red & blue) on the apron before. Was it unique to that machine  !@#

The playfield came up nice ^^^ ^^^ Are there any plans for the apron or is it being left as is?? Still looks good though, at least it not all scratched up like some i've seen.

Sorry if i missed it in the thread somewhere, but what are the plans for the cabinet, ie will it be resprayed??
And will the front right hand corner be repaired (bolts removed/holes filled etc)??

Mitch - I started on the playfield as my thoughts were that if I can get the playfield done with minimal paint lift, then I can work harder to have the rest of the machine "match" the playfield.

I've JUST started the cabinet. Check the photos on this page - they show the first pass at cleaning and the "before" pictures of the cabinet. I will be repairing the damaged front corner. It is currently glued / clamped and I'm sourcing the supplies I will need for the repair.

At this point - The owner does not want a respray, although this may happen at a future date. I think he just wants to play it for now !

Apron - I've asked Gavin about his thoughts on repainting the Red and Green - Just waiting for his reply  #@#

Cool... Lookn forward to further updates

Replace or repair the shooter housing Nino? (I ask because I have one rusted just like it...)
Why is it called PMS?
Because "Mad Cow Disease" was already taken...

Cabinet rebuild

Not exactly a rebuild, but the front will be removed, cleaned up, repaired and refitted. Here's the stripped and cleaned cabinet ;

The section that needs to be attended to (from the inside). Even though it is structurally sound, it is UGLY and I don't like it  ^.^ The plan is simple. Remove the brackets and check to see exactly what went wrong for the repair to be this extreme. I can replace the brackets with hardwood 30mm cornices I found at Bunnings and used on my Pro Football (with great success).

Here's the front section removed. Looking at this angle, the removal of the left side (6 bolts and nuts) revealed that the join was loose. The sidewall join was broken, and the section that dovetails into the front panel was cut. The other side is fine. So I removed the staples and cleaned it up with an emery cloth to give it some "bite" later on.

Left hand side looking from the front. Seems to be ok - So I've cleaned it up;

Front section is not too bad, but the corners have "bowed" slightly on both sides. Not mach I can do here, so I've cleaned it up and checked to ensure it will fit back into the body - which it does. I will use liquid nail and clamps initially and wait 3-4 days to remove the clamps - well thats the plan !

I've moved to to cleaning the cabinet parts and polishing the parts in the tumbler !

Good work ^^^ ^^^ ^^^
I've never been game enough to remove a front (or rear) section from a cabinet on any of my restores, i've never really needed to... yet!!

Then again i havent had any cabs with frankenstein bolts hanging out of them either... well my Stern Dracula had large woodscrews and cup washers screwed into the front corners (i call these "Barry the Bodger" repairs) :lol :lol

Keep up the great work Nino @@*

After a week of being clamped and looking like this ;

It was time to remove the clamps. All I used was liquid nails, a square and mallet to get the front section back on. After the clamps were removed, the cabinet was already stable and ready for me to continue the repair.

Now I've removed the old wooden braces that held the front section to the sides. It was originally glued in with some long wood staples. Of course, most of this originally fitting was removed for the repairs (installation of the metal braces). I've used some hardwood timber I found at bunnings, which is really good for this application

So I cut it to size and then I have to level the area where the leg bolt plates are fitted. This was done with a rasp and then a finer wood file. Of course this is only done at the bottom half of the brace. Again - I use Liquid Nails.

Looks like this;

It will now sit for 3 days before I complete the job - which is simply to re enforce with nails and then drill the holes where the legbolts will fit through.

The replacement braces have had plenty of time to dry, so I've tacked in 6 nails (from the inside). It is now as strong as it is ever going to be. Next step is to drill out the legbolt holes. Looks harder than it is. Due to the profile of the braces I've used, I'm stilling into a square and straight profile, not into a corner wedge. I use a 3/8 Drill bit and start drilling. After they holes have been completed, I place the legbolt plate into position and nail it into the brace after checking the bolts fit without any issue. Looks like this when done;

After repairing the corners and filling in the divots, I've primed the section under the legs. This had to be done as at some stage, the game had the wrong legs (or defective ones), and they "dug in" to the wood. Moisture caused a bit of an issue in this area, so it was sanded, filled, sanded and primed. The idea is to paint the section white after the repairs.

Siderails

I was not happy with the scratched siderails and the corroded nails. This is how it looked and I didn't like it at all;

With the siderail removed, here are the tools required - WINDEX - YES - But it has to be the Original Windex, not the cheap stuff. You also need 240 or 360 Grit Wet/Dry - I used 240 Grit as this one was rough. First spray the siderail liberally ;

Then with a very straight hand and not too much pressure - glide across the siderail - Trick here is to have enough Windex to allow the sandpaper to move freely in long sweeps. Not enough windex will cause the motion to stop / start. You will feel the sandpaper "bite". When it stops biting - change it !

Here's the first pass on a finished siderail, and the other siderail that I have not started ;

Big Update !

Next job was to clean and check the baseboard. Plenty to do here. The contacts had to be cleaned and checked - initially with an air compressor and then each part was removed and cleaned. I did not obviously remove each complete switch stack - that would take forever ! Each contact was cleaned and adjusted. There was no way this machine was ever going to work - it had that many attempts to incorrectly adjust the contacts on the relays !

Here's a before picture ;

The baseboard is stripped. I sand the wood using 120 Grit and then refit the cards after cleaning them. I don't scan these as I don't like the scan printing out on white paper - I use original where possible, and if they are in poor condition, I laminate them.

Stepper Unit Rebuild

Big, bad and ugly. Had no hope in the world of working properly. Needed some serious rebuilding !

There's some serious grime !

After degreasing and soaking in alcohol, the unit can be rebuilt and tested before returning to the game.

Stepper is installed, all relays etc are done as well. A new power cable is installed - ready to go !

STEPPER BLING

One of my favorite pictures !

Nice work Nino, as usual ^^^

that base board came up good... stripping and cleaning/sanding one of these is something i've never bothered too much about in the past. but now you've got me thinking of doing the one in my Quickdraw as its pretty crappy looking. Quickdraw will probably be my next project me thinks  *%*
