The answer morrie is both.

My cabinet was factory decalled. My mates (Beaky) bk2000 was factory painted.

Somewhere along the line they changed from paint to decals.

correct brett. mine was the early release with the early plastic set. i assume they changed over to decals when they changed the plastic set but i may be wrong about the time of the change over from paint to decals, but they did start out as painted cabinets

Just checked out my BK2000 and it has a painted cab
What do others think, if your cab was painted and not in that bad condition
would you apply decals?

if the paint work was fine then i would leave it.

This era of games that are typically referred to as 'decals' were made with wood that had a white colored vinyl adhered to it, and the artwork was directly screened on.

If the artwork has dithering in it (the colored dots), there's no way it could be painted.

my bk2000 and Jokerz both have coloured dots.
when i sanded the paint off the jokerz i found no trace of white vinyl just paint then bare wood.
again with the bk2000 where the art work is scratched there is paint and then wood, no white vinyl.
but Bretts bk2000 has the art work on white vinyl, you can see it around the legs and where there are scratches and it can be peeled off like a decal leaving bare wood.

my bk2k has cracks in the paint and is flaking in some areas. (its a bit hard to tell by the pic) but you cannot peal it off like a decal
and in the other photo shows the side that is only partly sanded on my jokerz, it shows only layers of paint.

the dithering on bretts bk2k are alot clearer and sharper than mine and have faded as a decal would but mine shows no sign of any fading

a good question morrie, if u want a machine to look brand new, like fully refurbished then u would go with decals etc.
if the machine was say a 8.5 outta ten, you would put up with the original marked cabinet. in both cases here, beakys cabinet has no fade but cabinet damage requiring the full refurb. in my case, i have sun fade but no cabinet damage at all. both will be redecalled and will look brand new.

when a machine is done properly, u would have to go with that brand new look. my personal taste anyway. bk2000 redecalled will look amazing.  ^^^

johnj w jnr from the usa is absolutely correct in both cases. andrews is painted, but directly stenciled/screened on the wood.
but mine is decalled with a white background with the ink applied then to that whilst it was on the cabinet.
john w jnr sure knows his stuff.

Silk screening on wood will sand off like that too.

Silk screening on white vinyl will sand off leaving white vinyl behind.

This is a good read:

http://www.flippers.be/pinball_cabinets.html

Machines that were painted with paint used stencils and my understanding is that there is no way to do the dithering etc with stencils, that's done only with silk screening.

painted and then screened directly on to the wood i will agree with.
I was a little confused when you said they had vinyl.

Dam i lost this one, well sort of as there is no vinyl. LOL
I hate it when I lose.  <.>

The 2 x sets of Black Knight 2000 decals arrived today from USA.

Gee they look great. They were packed n posted on 8 March from the USA and arrived today being the 16th.
8 days is pretty good from half way around the world. Jeff and Crystal from Classic Arcades have some good stuff. It saved me having to copy them and I was glad they did all the hardwork.
At just $199 USA per set plus postage, it was an absolute bargain.   ^^^ ^^^ ^^^

Will post some photos when the machine is being redecalled.
