how to paint webbing
« on: May 25, 2013, 08:58:06 PM »
Hi all , I need some advice on how to paint webbing on old gottlieb machines. I have restored a few old machines with the speckled effect but not webbing. I use automotive acrylics as my choice of paint and I am restoring a Skyjump pinball for a mate so can anyone please help. Cheers Les

I ended up using unthinned black paint in the gun, set at 40psi with nozzle fan opened right out and paint needle screwed open too.  The gun then spits out a web as you move along which just lays on the surface, which I ended up sealing down by applying a couple of coats of clear.  I would suggest practicing on some white cardboard or plastic playing around with the gun before letting loose on your cabinet.

There is a little more info and some pics in this thread:

Yep.
Thicker paint with a lower pressure.. it takes a little bit of balancing to get the settings just right ( cheaper guns have less finite adjustments). Theres a sweet spot in the middle of a spotty spray to having paint dribble slowly out the nozzle and its all dependent on just how viscous the paint is.
As KTM450 says.. a practice piece of timber or similar is essential

Here's a recent repaint on an Ice Revue ;

As others have mentioned - whatever suits best.

I don't thin the paint at all. I use a touch up gun at 35 PSI and raise the pressure until the webbing starts to flow. Practice makes perfect. Clean the gun immediately after you are done !
