have you checked that pin 6 on each board is grounded properly?
use your multimeter to check this on the ohms or continuity with one wire on pin 6 and the other on a ground.

if they are locking on and then blowing the fuse then the diode wont be the problem.
the fuse set up is designed to blow when the coil locks on to protect the coil from burning out.

keeping it simple, without a ground on pin 6 the large transistor on the pop bumper driver boards will always be turned on.
you need to find out where the break or bad connection is for the ground going to pin 6.

check that you have a ground at the cpu board, connector J6 pin9
then check that pin 9 on the connector itself is connecting properly to pin 9 on the cpu board.
do this with the machine turned off.

looking at the raven schematic this is where the ground comes from for the pop bumper boards and the AUX lamp board (i am not sure if your machine has an aux lamp board)

I suppose you could do a ground mod on this wire also.
I haven't read into it but does any one know if this is another one of the ground problems that is common to system 80s?

Thanks for all the help especially beaky.wasnt that serious . unpluged the boards and re pluged them. dont waste fuses any more. must have been a dead short through conectors. thanks again

Well ive had heaps of fun playing his game untill during a game rthe flippers stop working. i havnt re pinned it yet. could this be the cause? if so where would be the best place to start re pinning? It doesnt happen all the time, just randomly

If its only one flipper, i would Check the EOS switch of the one that is not working, This would be under the playfield and is opened when the flipper is at full stroke. make sure it is closing properly when flipper is at rest , it may be just dirty but has to be closed firmly when flipper is at rest . check the flipper button wiring also may be a lose or broken wire. Connector J1 on the Solenoid driver board is the one you could try removing and reseating, it may be the fault...

Thanks i dont think it is the switch as its both flippers. unlike a tilt where the lights go out on the playfield. when the flippers stop working the lights stay on. lve got the pins and crimper now so i think ill just start there .

Sounds like a fuse for the flipper or the cabinet switch is pitted ?

I dont think its a fuse as when the ball goes out of play the machine resets for the next player and tthe flippers wpork fine untill it hapens again

Another question. i am going to re pin the board conectors this w/end. will that be enough or do i have to do all the earth plugs as well ? Ive already done the earth mods on the boards. and it has a black filter cap (not orange) should i renew that too? not sure if its a stupid question but what does a filter capacitor do?

Finally finished re pinning, changed the filter cap and all fuses. i played about 10 games with a mate yesterday with ni probs. worked out well as he baught it off me. Thanks everyone for your help as i am sure it would still be a mess without you guys.
