Interesting read, especially for me being an ex-smoker. I know how hard it is to give up, the lies you tell yourself and others, and how under-rated the real extent of the addiction is.

When I smoked it was always outside, so I could never imagine smoking inside at someone else's place.

It was odd at the Formula 1 this year when a fellow lit up in our stand - I haven't seen anyone flaunt the rules like that in years. People sat there not knowing what to do they were so stunned by this guy smoking there.

We were talking on the footy bus back last night about the early days (we've had a bus of our own to the games for 25 years this year), and how we even smoked on the bus in the early years, I can remember smoking then as well (no kids back then, lots now).

The tax is well in excess of the estimated cost to the health system, its no different to the tax on petrol - nothing like what is gathered is spent on road infrastructure. It's just become part of the consolidated revenue.

I don't smoke but if I get guests over to play a game or two I tell them to go outside to smoke.
The windex gets a bashing after they leave to get there grubby finger marks of my playfield glass.

I think it best i stay out of the smoking argument.lol  its about games rooms n smoke, not about smoking which is what i said earlier in the thread.lol

Its about pinball, not about smoking. Its too easy to jump on the pro or against band wagon. No one is right or wrong. As long as the pinball machines are happy, and kept safe ne sound etc, it doesnt really matter either way.lol

Also, I wanted to add, my mum is 70 yrs old, she has been smoking for 55 years, and never got sick once or been to hospital for it etc, so there are people who do smoke heavily for 55 yrs and it doesnt affect squat, so go figure. Its a weird world. lol

it doesn't annoy me that it's taxed to crap, but it does annoy me when peoPle say smokers don't pull their weight, as for long waiting lists that would be down to gov over smokers problem. As shown above the gov makes close too $62b from smokers over ten years yet the cost smoking to the health system is $35b over ten years according to the budget. So if that money was being used on hospitals not ahit like $44b broadband networks you could be happy people smoke lol. Saves none smokers alot tax, host portals being over crowded is government failings as explained smoking revenue is big enough to solve many of those issues. Smokers can't be blamed for everything, but hey why not treat smokers who getill. Or the stupid kid who breaks his arm frOm riding a skate board because it's dangerous. The truth of the matter is a smoker pays $1600 a year on average more tax than some one else on the same wage who is a none smoker. If they weren't being taxed that much you would be

There's a constant debate over the tax vs. costs between the scare mongerers and the tobacco industry - not exactly an industry that's trustworthy!!

But, at it's simplest, the tax on fags is 62.5% (excise plus GST). Someone spending $20.00 a day smoking pays $4500.00 extra tax a year.  That's more than I pay for private health cover.

Anyway, back on topic, and sorry for mentioning the tax issue originally as it is a hotly debated area but best not debated here.

No smoking in my pinball room!

I'm not using lobby figures I'm using gov bUdget figures. The $33-35b figure was first recorded in 2005 under tOny Abbott when health minister, when he first introduced images on packages. It was for projected 10 year period. Anti tabasco lobiest use that figure them selves but almost always forget to explain its time period. The figures of renenue of tax is from Wayne swans 10-11 budget after increasing smoking tax by $5b over 4 years. Hope that helPs
